Magnesium is a mineral. The average persons body contains just one ounce of magnesium, but this small amount is vital to a number of important bodily functions. Many people do not have adequate stores of magnesium, often because they rely heavily on processed food, which contains very little of this mineral.

The mechanisms of how magnesium works are complex and varied depending on what it is being used for. However, it plays a vital part in over 300 biochemical pathways in the body.

Recent research has indicated that Magnesium is beneficial for the prevention of heart disease. The mineral appears to lower blood pressure and has been found to aid recovery after a heart attack by inhibiting blood clots, widening arteries, and normalizing dangerous arrhythmias. Magnesium has also been shown to be involved in energy production, nerve function, and bone and teeth formation. Magnesium relaxes muscles and so is used for sports injuries and fibromyalgia, and to ease PMS and menstrual cramps.
